Mealworms from My Animal World

Thank you for choosing mealworms from My Animal World!

We hope your scaly friends enjoy them just as much as ours do.

Why Feed Mealworms?

Mealworms have been a staple feeder insect for decades—for reptiles, amphibians, birds, and even people (yep, really). They’re easy to raise, widely available, and can be stored in the refrigerator for extended periods, making them a convenient and reliable protein source.

Because of this, mealworms often make up a significant portion of many animals’ diets… but there’s an important catch.

The Catch: Not All Mealworms Are Equal

As reptile keeping grew in popularity in the 1990s, veterinarians began noticing an increase in digestive and metabolic issues. One major cause? Poor-quality feeder insects.

Most store-bought mealworms are:

  • Raised on low-nutrient bran
  • Kept refrigerated for long periods
  • Naturally high in chitin (their tough outer shell)

This combination can lead to:

  • Digestive issues (like impaction)
  • Low nutritional value
  • Long-term deficiencies

Because of this, many keepers moved toward other feeders like crickets, which have softer bodies and a more varied nutrient profile.

The Game Changer: Gut Loading

Over time, experienced keepers and breeders discovered something important:

Mealworms themselves aren’t the problem—what they eat is.

When properly gut-loaded (fed nutrient-rich foods before being offered as prey), mealworms become significantly more nutritious and beneficial.

Think of it like this:

A mealworm is like a tortilla.

The shell matters—but what’s inside is what makes it a complete meal.

By feeding mealworms high-quality foods and properly hydrating them, their nutritional value improves dramatically—making them a much more valuable part of a balanced diet.

Why Choose Mealworms from My Animal World?

This is where we come in

Our mealworms are:

  • Raised on a nutrient-rich, breeder-proven diet
  • Supplemented with organic vegetables for hydration and nutrition
  • Kept refrigerated for minimal time to maintain quality
  • Produced in a way that prioritizes health over mass production

You’ll notice right away—they don’t look like typical “big box store” worms.

Supporting Local Pet Stores

Because of the care and labor involved, our mealworms are not mass-produced for large chains.

Instead, we partner with:

  • Local pet stores we trust
  • Reptile expos and community events

That means when you purchase from us, you’re also supporting businesses that truly care about animal health and proper husbandry.

Want to see the difference?

Try comparing ours side-by-side with standard store worms—we think you’ll notice immediately.

Feeding & Care Instructions

1. Buy Smart

Only purchase what you can use within a reasonable timeframe.

Freshness matters more than saving a few cents.

2. Wake & Feed Your Worms First

Before feeding:

  • Bring worms out of refrigeration for at least 24 hours
  • Provide hydration with:
    • Organic carrot
    • Dark leafy greens (collards, romaine, dandelion, etc.)
  • Wash produce before use.

3. Easy Feeding

  • Use a smooth-sided dish to prevent escape
  • Or feed in a controlled area where worms can’t burrow or hide

4. Balance is Everything

Even high-quality mealworms are not a complete diet.

Be sure to:

  • Provide calcium and/or D3 supplementation as needed
  • Offer a variety of feeder insects
  • Tailor nutrition to your species

Because let’s be honest…

Even the best burrito shouldn’t be every meal

Final Thoughts

With proper care and nutrition, mealworms can go from an occasional treat to a valuable part of your animal’s diet.

We’re proud to offer feeders we trust for our own animals—and we’re so glad they’re going home with yours.
